Why Jump Training Is Important

Why is Vertical Jump Training important? Easy! Basically the importance of the jump training is to obtain the vertical jump height that you are aiming for!

To effectively increase your vertical jump, you have to first undergo vertical jump training. But before that the first thing to do is to get your body well prepared physically and mentally. You first do warm up exercises.

Warm up exercises has four elements.

The first element is General Warm up. General warm up is composed of light activities like walking, jogging, stationary biking or basic aerobics. The level and length of the exercises should be based on the athletes' level of fitness. Proper general warm up for an average person should take about approximately five to ten minutes to produce light sweat. The purpose of the general warm up is to slightly elevate the cardiac and respiratory rate. This is a compensatory mechanism that takes action when blood pressure rises to hasten the transport of oxygen and nutrients into the working muscles.

The second element is Static stretching. Take note: Static. This stretching is the safest and easiest form of stretching. It poses a limited risk for injury and is very helpful in developing overall flexibility. This portion of the warm up should last for at least 5 minutes and the major muscle groups in the body should be involved during this part.

Third is, Specific sport warm up. In this portion of the warm up; the athletes are preparing their body for the demands of their sport. Here they do vigorous exercises that are needed and appropriate for their own particular sport.

Fourth and the last is dynamic stretching. This last portion of warm up should be finished with a dynamic stretch. This warm up exercise is high risk for injury so proper execution is really needed. Dynamic stretching is composed of a controlled, soft bounce, or a swinging motion to force a particular body part outside its normal range of motion. The force exerted is gradually increased but should always be under control.

There is quite a controversy whether to include stretching in warm up exercises or not. Stretching IS a part of warm up! The key to this controversy is that stretching is a significant part of warm up, but stretching is NOT the warm up. The vital concept in this part is that you should execute the mechanics perfectly together with the other elements to avoid any injury at all. Just keep in mind that stretching is part of the warm up, not the warm up itself.

Basketball paraphernalia manufacturers state that they make 207,000 basketballs each year. It is also reported that from 1998 to the present time, approximately $60 million were earned from selling nearly 3.6 million basketballs in the United States alone. Given these figures, maybe it is okay to say that basketball is among one of the most well-liked sports in the United States, and even in the world. Anybody can play basketball, and any person can build a basketball goal in their own houses, or expressionless lots in their village district.

A basketball goal has two types. Depending on your necessity or your preference, you can decide to get a goal for institutional use or for residential usage. Institutional basketball equipments are used by professionals. NBA courts, public school courts and community courts all uses institutional basketball system since they are composed of heavyweight basketball hoops, poles and basketball boards. There are four types of institutional basketball systems, that is the inground adjustable which can be adjusted via its pole depending on the height and age of the players; the inground fixed height which has a customary height regulated for all professional basketball sport; the portable basketball which can be moved to new areas; and last of all the wall mount basketball system which has no use of the pole and can be casted off to any flat pavement.

For residential purposes on the other hand, you can also decide between the inground adjustable or fixed height, the portable basketball system and the roof or wall mounted basketball hoops. Residential purposes are mostly for recreational purposes, so you can decide to select a less-professional looking basketball court. A basketball hoop and a basketball could do as well as a cleared lot.

But, currently, you can also decide to erect a basketball goal along your swimming pool, so you can a much more fun swim. It is also great for get-together party and pool parties for your friends. But, if you are hosting for a kid's pool party, do not disregard to post a padding to ensure safekeeping and well-being for your kids.

Performing a Crossover in Basketball: The Crossover Action Machine

A crossover is a low and quick bounce that allows the player to quickly switch direction, and more importantly, momentum. This swift change in momentum will easily allow the player to outmaneuver the opponent, opening a path to the basketball hoop.

Performing a crossover requires different traits, along with exercise and practice. The player should have the dexterity to keep phenomenal control of the basketball. This is important in being able to bounce the basketball as quick as possible without letting it slip.

The legs should be toned and strong. The ability to act during the crossover dribble is important as the player analyzes the weak points of a defender. The defender will only allow several seconds, and the player must act quickly on those precious seconds.

The upper body should be flexible yet built. The player's body must move in sync, giving the defender a sense of predictability. A crossover is a deceptive move which requires the utmost caution. Momentum should be controllable to a certain extent.

The biggest aspect of performing a crossover is having the right mindset. A mindset that focuses on faking the defender by thinking ahead of the game. A crossover is essentially a well thought out fake.

New York Knicks at Atlanta Hawks

The New York Knicks have been struggling lately, the Atlanta Hawks have been soaring, and that adds up to a bad spot for the Knickerbockers when they visit Atlanta on Friday (7:30 pm ET, MSG, SportSouth). New York is 3-7 SU in its past 10 overall, a very average 12-12 SU on the road this season, and 3-6 SU in its last nine trips to Atlanta.

The Knicks were full of hope when the season began, mainly because of the arrival of Amar'e Stoudemire last summer via free agency. But New York opened at 3-7 SU to start the campaign and it looked like another losing season was ahead. And then the team went on a torrid 13-2 SU run from mid-November thru mid-December, and once again the Knicks were the toast of the town.But since then, the Knicks are 6-12 SU, and just ended a six-game losing streak - their second of the season - against the lowly Washington Wizards earlier this week.

Atlanta is 7-3 SU in its past 10 and a very respectable 14-7 SU at home, fifth best in the Eastern conference. Like the Orlando Magic, the Hawks seem to be getting extra motivation because of the arrival of LeBron James in the Southeast division. With James in Miami, both the Magic and Hawks seem to be trying to keep up with the Heat, and they're doing a good job, with Atlanta just a game behind Orlando and three back of Miami.

Speaking of Miami, that's who New York faced Thursday night - at home. A trip to Atlanta to face the rested and waiting Hawks spells doom for the Knicks, and good news for Hawks backers.

Dallas Mavericks Visit Boston Celtics on ESPN

The Dallas Mavericks had a tough time adjusting to life without forward Caron Butler after he went down with a season-ending knee injury on New Year's Day. But the Mavs (33-15 SU, 24-22-2 ATS) seem well-adjusted now, having won six straight, and Friday they look for seven in a row when they visit the Eastern conference-leading Boston Celtics (8 pm ET, ESPN). Dallas went through a particularly bad stretch just after Butler's injury when Dirk Nowitzki was also sidelined with an injury, losing seven of the nine games he missed. But since his return, the Mavericks have re-established themselves as one of the best in the West. On Wednesday, the Mavs rolled into Madison Square Garden and had their way with the New York Knicks, not an easy feat this season. Dallas won handily, 113-97, and cashed as a 2-point road underdog. The score went over the total of 208.5. Dallas shot 50.0 percent and out-rebounded the Knicks 54-34.

In the process, Nowitzki became the 24th player to reach 22,000 points in NBA history. And Nowitzki is a beast when he faces the Celtics, averaging 27.3 points per game, his highest point average against any opponent. This will be the first game back for Boston (37-11 SU, 23-23-2 ATS) after a four-game Western road swing on which the team went 3-1 SU. The Celtics closed out the trip Tuesday with a 95-90 win over the Sacramento Kings but failed to cover as a 6.5-point road favorite. The score went under the total of 191.The trip included a 108-96 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in the teams' first meeting since last season's seven-game NBA Finals series. Dallas and Boston are both 5-5 SU in the past 10 head-to-head, but the Celtics have a big edge against the spread at 8-2 ATS. They met once earlier this season, an 89-97 Dallas win as a 3.5-point home favorite on Nov. 8.

Boston College Eagles at No. 3 Duke Blue Devils

The Boston College Eagles take on the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils in an ACC conference clash Thursday at the Cameron Indoor Stadium (8 pm ET, ESPN3).Boston College, at 14-6 SU, 7-7 ATS and 4-2 in ACC play, is holding its own in the conference, just one game back of the Blue Devils and the second-place Florida State Seminoles. But the Eagles have dropped two of their past three, against the Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes.

Duke (18-1, 9-8 ATS, 5-1 ACC) has rebounded nicely from its Jan. 12 upset loss against the Seminoles, with three straight wins, although all three have come against less-than-formidable opponents. Duke has dominated the Eagles straight up at 9-1 SU in the past 10 meetings, but is just 3-7 ATS in those matchups. BC, in fact, is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. The score has gone over the total in seven of the last 10 meetings.The Blue Devils won both meetings last season.

On Feb. 6, Duke won 66-63 but failed to cover as an 8-point road favorite. In their first meeting last season, Duke beat Boston College 79-59 and cashed as a 16-point home favorite.BC lost 67-51 to FSU in its last game on Saturday. The Eagles could not cover as an 8-point road underdog and the score went under the total of 136.5. Duke beat the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 83-59 on Saturday, covering as a 23-point road favorite. 4. Work on Passing

5. Practice, Practice, Practice

It might help you to have in mind that your sports heroes are as human as you when they're working their plyometrics.

- Don't neglect your "core". Much of the motion of leaping vertically is the burden of the body's core muscles. A strong abdomen will definitely help to increase your vertical leap, and exercise routines that feature activities like leg lifts, jackknifes and medicine ball throws will certainly bulk up both your abs and your core in general.

No. 24 Illinois Fighting Illini at Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten Matchup on CBS

The No. 24 Illinois Fighting Illini and the Northwestern Wildcats hook up for a nationally televised Big Ten matchup at the Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday (1 pm ET, CBS) The Fighting Illini (15-7, 10-10 ATS, 5-4 Big Ten) were able to stop a brief losing streak in their last game but will need to string some wins together to catch the Purdue Boilermakers and Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten. All three are well back of the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes.Northwestern (13-8 SU, 9-6 ATS, 3-7 Big Ten) is even more desperate for wins, as the Wildcats have lost three straight.

Illinois had been on a two-game slide before it beat the Penn State Nittany Lions 68-51 on Monday. The Fighting Illini covered as an 8-point home favorite and the score stayed under the total of 130. Mike Davis scored 22 points to lead Illinois. He scored 10 points on dunks, much to the delight of the sparse crowd that turned out despite a bitter winter storm. Davis scored seven straight points midway through the second half to give the Illini a 52-39 lead, and Bill Cole added 10 for the Illini. Northwestern got a big confidence boost in its last game, as it almost knocked off No. 1 Ohio State. The Wildcats lost 58-57 but cashed as a 10-point home underdog.

The Wildcats will be out for revenge in this matchup, as they were embarrassed in a 25-point loss against Illinois in their last meeting on Jan. 6. The Fighting Illini cruised to an 88-63 rout and easily cashed as an 8-point home favorite. The score went over the over/under total of 143. Illinois has absolutely owned the Wildcats straight up in the recent head-to-head series, going 9-1 SU in the past 10. John Wall Vs Blake Griffin - Who Is Better and How to Get Their Autographs

Who is John Wall? All I know is that he is a rookie that does not compare with Blake Griffin. Did John Wall score 47 points in a game this season? Did Wall get invited to the dunk contest? College Basketball - Seton Hall Vs Syracuse

The Syracuse Orange must be wondering what hit them. Last week, the Orange were cruising through the College Basketball season, undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the nation. Then along came the Pitt Panthers, who stunned Syracuse in their game last Monday, jumping out to a 19-0 lead en route to handing the Orange their first loss of the season. On Saturday, Syracuse faced the No. 7 Villanova Wildcats, who used the Panthers' formula for success against the Orange: strike early and often. Guards Maalik Wayns and Corey Fisher combined to hit 6 of 7 shots from beyond the arc in the first half, pacing Nova to a 40-29 halftime lead and giving the Orange their second-straight setback. Syracuse couldn't even get the rebound win with a season-high crowd of 33, 736, second-largest in Carrier Dome history, cheering them on. On Tuesday, it could be the Seton Hall Pirates who'll be wondering what hit them. Syracuse (18-2, 5-2 Big East) will host Seton Hall (8-12, 2-6 Big East), and it's highly unlikely the Orange will drop three straight.

And Syracuse won't have to just win outright to reverse its slide down the AP and ESPN/USA Today Polls; the Orange know they'll need to cover a bigspread as well. The two losses last week dropped Syracuse all the way down to 9th in the AP and 10th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Orange can also use their last game against the Pirates as motivation. On Jan. 8, Seton Hall nearly pulled off the upset of the season, trailing the Orange by just one point at the half and losing a close 61-56 decision. Syracuse failed to cover as a 7. 5-point road favorite in that game.

NCAA Red Raiders Defeat Cowboys in Overtime

Texas Tech defeated Oklahoma State 75-74 in overtime during last Saturday's game. The Texas Red Raiders started the season off a little shaky with poor defensive strategies, then they improved their defense but weren't making any baskets. Hopefully this recent victory over Oklahoma will now smoothen out the rest of their season. Texas coach Pat Knight is now confident that the team will finish stronger than where they started the season from.

One of the star players from Saturday's game was guard John Roberson, the Texas Tech senior, who hit a three-pointer with only fifty-three seconds remaining in overtime, pulling a victory over Oklahoma State. Roberson has played in 99 total Red Raider games and started 93 games in three seasons in his junior year alone. He also received an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for the 2009-2010 season.

On the other side of the court, Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford claims that the reason for the team's loss was because of poor shooting. With all considering, the leader of the Cowboys pack was Keiton Page. The Cowboys did have a chance to win after Page's two free throws brought them to 74 within the last thirty-three seconds of overtime. Page also slammed three of his ten free throws to tie the game with 68 sending the game into overtime. The only saving grace for the Cowboys was their ability to master the rebounds and second chance points. They were close, but not close enough.

The rest of the season will be interesting for the two teams. Will the Red Raiders continue to learn from their mistakes from the beginning of the season long enough to finish the season strong? And will the Cowboys master the baskets in time to turn their season around? Tune in next game.

Detroit Pistons At Miami Heat

The Detroit Pistons will be hoping for a better result in their second meeting of the season with the Miami Heat on Friday at American Airlines Arena (7:30 pm ET, FOX Sports Detroit, Sun Sports).When the teams last met in early December, the Heat were just hitting their stride, rolling over opponents at will. And that's exactly what they did to Detroit, routing the Pistons 97-72. Miami easily cashed as an 11.5-point home favorite and the score went under the total of 191.5. But the Pistons will be facing a Miami team that is in the midst of one of the more challenging points in their schedule, as the Heat play four games in five nights. Friday's date with the Pistons will be the second of those games after Miami faced the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Jump Workout Secrets

Is there such a thing as the perfect jump workout? Well, no, but in their relentless pursuit of a few more inches on their next awe-inspiring, gravity-defying vertical leap to the hoop, many basketball players (and other athletes) incorporate a few fundamental ideas in their workout routines that have them flying ever higher and ever farther against their competition.

If you're considering developing a jump workout to add some inches to your game, it's certainly helpful to remember some basic realities before starting out. Keep in mind that each athlete is unique, and that every baller has his or her own distinctive style of physically leaping. A jump workout for your on-the-court hero is almost certainly not necessarily the ideal jump workout for you.

Although it should go without saying, it also certainly bears repeating that one sure-fire way to invite physical problems into your quest would be to over-exercise. You never want to push yourself beyond your physical limits -- no matter what stage of physical development you might be in. Doing so always constitutes a risk of injury, and all that does is push an already slowly-obtained goal back even further.

And there's never a need to rep the same exercise routine a thousand times. Instead, settle on a number in the vicinity of 75 to 100. What's more, you can effectively improve your vertical leap by working out as little as three times a week, averaging an hour a pop.

One effective type of rep for any jump workout is known as the plyometric exercise. An internet search on this topic will yield plenty of ideas in the way of developing an effective jump workout routine.

A current template (if you will) for a jump workout, that's customizeable for your particular physical needs and realities, is known as the Jump Manual. It's been successful enough to have been featured in leading sports publications, such as Sports Illustrated.

Michigan Wolverines at Michigan State Spartans

The Michigan State Spartans host Big Ten and state rival Michigan Wolverines on Thursday, with the once-mighty Spartans looking to start salvaging their season (7 pm ET, ESPN).Michigan State (12-7 SU, 6-11 ATS, 4-3 Big Ten) has seen better years - like last year, when the Spartans went to the Final Four. Tom Izzo's team had high expectations to open the 2010-11 College Basketball season, with veteran club still high on its March Madness experience.

Ranked in the top three to start the season, most expected Izzo and Co. to be back in the Final Four in Houston.Just to compound the disappointment so far this season at MSU, starting guard Korie Lucious was dismissed this week, after he "displayed conduct detrimental to the program," Izzo said in statement. But Izzo is a future Hall of Famer, and he will have the Spartans jacked up for Thursday's game against the Wolverines, who in many ways are the perfect opponent at the perfect time for the Spartans. Michigan State is 8-2 SU in the past 10 head-to-head meetings, although the Spartans have covered just half those matchups.

When they last met March 7 last season, the Spartans blew them out 64-48, cashing as a 10-point home favorite. The previous meeting was a tad tighter, the Spartans edging the Wolverines 57-56 on Jan. 26, failing to cover as a 4-point road favorite. Michigan State lost 86-76 to the No. 12 Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday as a 6-point road underdog.The loss dropped MSU to 25th in the AP rankings and right out of the ESPN/USA Today Poll. Look for the Spartans to bounce back Thursday.

Number 20 Georgetown Hoyas at Number 7 Villanova Wildcats

Big East conference rivals the No. 20 Georgetown Hoyas and the No. 7 Villanova Wildcats clash in NCAA College Basketball action Saturday (12 pm ET, ESPN). After a rough patch that saw them lose four of five games between Dec. 29 and Jan. 12, the Hoyas (15-5 SU, 11-7 ATS and 4-4 Big East) seem revitalized and have won three straight. Villanova (17-3 SU, 10-6 ATS, 5-2 Big East) was roaring through the season up until three games ago, when it lost to the UConn Huskies. The Wildcats bounced back with a huge win over the Syracuse Orange but were then upset by unranked Providence. Head-to-head, the Hoyas have a slight edge at 6-4 SU, while both teams have covered the spread five times in the past 10 meetings. Three of the past four have gone over the over/under total.

This is the first meeting between the teams since last season. They split two games last year. Georgetown won 103-90 on Feb. 6, covering as a 2-point home favorite. The score went well over the total of 151. And Villanova won 82-77 as a 4. 5-point favorite on Jan. 17. The score in that matchup went over the total of 146. 6. Georgetown blew out the St. John's Red Storm 77-52 on Wednesday, cashing as a 7. 5-point home favorite. Villanova lost to Providence as a 6-point road favorite on Wednesday. The Wildcats got a poor effort from their two Coreys - Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes, who combined for just four field goals and one 3-pointer.

Jump Higher In Basketball and Fly Like MJ

Basketball is indeed a game of inches, but for most of us, flying as many inches off the ground as a Kobe Bryant or a Vince Carter or (daresay) a Michael Jordan just isn't going to come naturally. For most of us, a healthy dose of elbow grease is going to have to be in the cards in order to tack a few more precious inches onto our own vertical leap. Here, then, are some exercises to jump higher in basketball.

When getting started with exercise of any type, it's always wise to spend a few moments beforehand getting warmed up and stretched out. The most important result of any workout regimen, including those that feature exercises to jump higher, is to walk away from the activity afterward without an injury. A pre-workout warm-up is your best defense against such an injury.

Once you're loose, get into a decent steady physical rhythm on a jump-rope. The non-stop hopping motion provides solid conditioning for reactionary leg muscles, which of course contribute to your vertical leap.

Next, try moving into some deep knee-bends. Initially stand with your feet at a width shoulders-apart, then slowly bend down with your knees while keeping a straight back posture. Crouch as low as you can, and hold that extreme position for three to five seconds. After that, rise back up slowly to your original standing position. Fifteen is a decent round number of reps for a first attempt at deep knee-bends, but over time, try to increase your total number of reps in increments of ten every few days, eventually topping out in the neighborhood of 75 reps per routine.

Another simple, highly effective example of exercises to jump higher would be toe raises. Pick any safe and solid spot to stand still with your feet somewhat close together. Raise your body up onto the balls of your feet, using your toes for added balance, and then lower yourself back down slowly. It's truly as easy an exercise as it sounds.

Finally, mix in a routine of stomach crunches. Lie flat on your back, and use your abdominal muscles to elevate your shoulders to just above the floor surface. The result from this activity is an increased strength in critical "core" muscle groups, which are very important for increasing leaping performance. Oh, and they'll make your abs look pretty!

So try a few of these exercises to jump higher when you get the chance, and before you know it, you'll be flying like MJ himself.

No 19 Louisville Cardinals at No 20 Georgetown Hoyas

NCAA Basketball bettors have a great Big East matchup to look forward to as two teams coming off big wins clash Monday night at the Verizon Center, with the No. 19 Louisville Cardinals visiting the No. 20 Georgetown Hoyas (7 pm ET, ESPN). Both teams scored huge upset road wins on the weekend, the Cardinals getting past the No. 5 Connecticut Huskies and the Hoyas upending the No. 7 Villanova Wildcats. Louisville beat UConn 79-78 in a double overtime thriller at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on Saturday. The Cardinals cashed as a 5.5-point road underdog and the score went over the over/under total of 142. Point guard Peyton Siva had 19 points to pace the Cardinals.

The Hoyas beat the Wildcats 69-66 and covered the spread as a 4.5-point underdog on Saturday. The score stayed under the total of 144.5. Austin Freeman, this preseason player of the year, had a lights-out performance for Georgetown. The guard scored 10 of Georgetown's final 12 points and finished with 30.Georgetown has now won four straight after dropping three in a row. Louisville (17-4 SU, 9-6 ATS, 6-2 Big East) is just 1.5 games behind the Big East-leading No. 2 Pittsburgh Panthers. Georgetown (16-5 SU, 12-7 ATS, 5-4 Big East) is three games behind Pitt. Head-to-head, the Hoyas are 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS in the past five meetings. The teams haven't met since Feb. 23 last season, when the Hoyas won 70-60 and cashed as a 4-point road underdog. The score went under the total of 140.5.

A Brief History of the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Team

The Atlanta Hawks are an Eastern Conference National Basketball Association (NBA) team that began in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons of the National Basketball League (NBL). Only 13 games into its first season, owner Ben Kerner relocated the franchise to Moline, Illinois, a city then known as one of the "Tri-Cities." As a gesture toward the region, the franchise was renamed the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, becoming one of the NBA's 17 original franchises when it merged with the NBL in 1949.

As mentioned in the Leo Wells sports blog, the team ended its first season with a trip to the playoffs under coach Red Auerbach, and then notoriously traded the draft rights for future Hall of Famer Bob Cousey. However, after moving from Moline to Milwaukee in 1952 and becoming the Hawks, the franchise redeemed itself by drafting future Hall of Famer Bob Petit in 1953.

Failure in Milwaukee and Success in St. Louis

Despite the versatile Petit, the squad played poorly in Milwaukee, prompting their move to St. Louis in 1955. But in 1957, with Petit as the centerpiece, the squad reached the NBA finals, loosing to the perennial powerhouse Boston Celtics in a closely contested game seven. In 1958, they faced the Celtics in the finals once again, this time winning their only NBA championship.

The Hawks would meet the Celtics in the 1960 and 1961 finals as well, losing both times. But the drafting of Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens in 1961 would give the franchise a bright spot for years to come. Though Demarcus Cousins demonstrated his versatility by hitting an outside shot, it still wasn't enough. Down by one, Celtics forced a Sacramento turnover, allowing Pierce to drive to the hoop. Big "Baby" Davis was also able to add to Celtics lead in the fourth quarter with an all time "IN YOUR FACE" dunk. He had fourteen points off the bench. Rondo finished with seventeen points and eighteen assists.

Carolina Tarheels Hold Off the Miami Hurricanes

Freshman player Harrison Barnes of the North Carolina Tar-heels had a stellar game in Miami on January 26th, 2011, leading his team to a 74-71 win over the Miami Hurricanes. Barnes sank a three-pointer giving them the edge with only six seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The Hurricanes started early with a fourteen-point lead, but the Tar-heels were able to press ahead. This recent win gives North Carolina seven games in a row that they have beat the Miami Hurricanes as well as improving their season record to 14-5.

During the fourth quarter of the game, Barnes landed a fifteen-foot shot with one minute and nine seconds left to tie to the score. Despite the efforts of Miami's Malcolm Grant to land a three-pointer to lead the team to overtime, he missed and the Carolina kept the lead. Miami did have a season-high thirteen three-pointers in the game. Miami was able to sink four of those three-pointers in a row in the first half putting Miami up 18-4 after less than seven minutes in the game.

The Tar-heels were able to score on nineteen of twenty-two possessions. The second half of a back and forth with thirteen lead changes. However, North Carolina was able to hold off Miami without a single basket in the last four minutes, finishing the game 74-71.

With performances by Harrison Barnes only being a freshman, the Tarheels have a strong rookie on their team. The Tar-heels go on to play North Carolina State and Boston College, two very strong teams, but the performance of the Tarheels behind their skilled freshman, Harrison Barnes, should be able to continue their ongoing success and strength as they head towards March Madness.

Basketball Success: The Basics Of Solid Defense

While those successful goals are the most telling indicator when you are winning a basketball game, any true champion knows that a good team's success often lies in their defense. Your ability to prevent rebounds and limit turnover is an invaluable asset in any game and a team without defensive tactics will never be the best. Let's look at some of the basics you should work on to be a great defending player.

The first thing any player should learn when it comes to defense is perfecting their stance. The solid stance begins by maintaining just over a shoulder-width distance between your two feet and resting on the balls of your feet. If someone pushes on you, you should not sway or move at all-your balance should be solid and evenly distributed.

Keep your knees bent, arms out, elbows bent, and palms up. Keep your head up as well, and direct your attention towards the level of the opposing player's stomach, as this is a great center for reading and anticipating movement. While the heads, eyes, shoulders, or limbs can often be used to distract you or fake you out, the midsection rarely lies.

Learn to use an opposing player's disadvantages against them. Players will often drive to one side or the other, in favor of their stronger hand (right or left), but you can keep them on their toes by forcing them to play their weaker side. Learn to change your position to keep them going where they do not want to go.

Properly staying on an offensive player is all about confusing them and restricting their movement while going with their movement when it is inevitable. It is a balance.

Another crucial element of defense is knowing when you lost your player and compensating for that. Learn to signal or alert other players on your team when this happens, and then run back to your opponent as fast as possible to resume your defensive position. Never give up and stop when they get away.

There is a lot more to proper defense than this, but these are some good points to keep in mind. Never forget that a good offense will never be good enough to win alone-they may win a lot of games between two mediocre teams, but when it comes to the wins that count, they will always come up short.
